Mike Conley Was The Most Surprising DFS Dud Of The 2019-2020 NBA Season

Posted on April 30, 2020

What a difference a year can make. The Utah Jazz’s addition of Mike Conley seemed like a match made in heaven at first glance. The 32-year-old, who was one of the top NBA picks in the draft in 2007, appeared to have plenty left in the tank after posting a career-high 21.1 points and 6.4 assists per contest in the 2018-2019 season for the Memphis Grizzlies. It was also expected that he would thrive with the best supporting cast he has ever been around.

Starting the season, Conley was going for $7,500 on DraftKings and $7,800 on FanDuel. It took a couple of months and a brief demotion to the bench for these larger salaries to dip. Just before the NBA suspended its season, Conley’s DraftKings salary was all the way down to $5,300 and his FanDuel salary had plummeted to $5,600. It became NBA consensus that Mike Conley may be washed up and a bust in Utah.

It has been a roller-coaster of a season for Conley. The guard hasn’t had much consistency to speak of. He’ll rattle off four different 50-point outbursts in a six-game span, only to fall off and tally four-straight under 30 points. He has earned the title of volatile and his season averages aren’t pretty. Conley’s numbers are way down. He’s averaging a pedestrian 13.8 points, 4.3 assists, and 3.2 rebounds, along with a reduced shooting percentage of 40.5. The percentage doesn’t matter in DFS, but when his shots per game have taken a hit by over four per game (including nearly five less minutes per game), then it becomes worrisome.

The former first-round pick has seen better days. This season has most of us wondering if he’ll ever be himself again. The change in scenery could be affecting his output, as this is the first time Conley has ever been on a team other than the one that drafted him in 2007. Still, Conley’s days as a major DFS contributor seem behind him. We also don’t see Conley impacting any NBA spreads like he used to in Memphis. Just know that he’ll get hot for a week before crashing and burning your DFS lineups. Proceed with caution.
